Star

Star is an approximately 15 year old bay mare – breed unknown.

She is dangerously underweight.

We were surprised that she is only about 15 years old…we expected she might be much older since she is in much worse condition than most of the others living with her.

April 13 2022

Star is starting to show visible improvement. Her coat is shedding well and the new growth is softer and healthier.

She is slowly putting on weight which is what we want. A horse in her condition must be fed slowly, gradually by multiple small meals through the day.

If you find yourself rescuing a horse this emaciated, it is tempting to try to help by throwing a lot of food at them. Don’t! Feeding too much too fast could actually kill them!

Please be sure you research and understand how to do a safe re-feeding program. Consult your veterinarian or someone with experience in recovery of horses like Star.

May 2022 Update

Star continues to slowly improve. She is not recovering as quickly as her herd mate, Spark, but that’s okay.

She is still slowly putting on weight that is now more distributed, meaning its not all concentrated in her belly.

June 2022 Update

Star is doing great! She continues to steadily gain weight and build muscle.

She has a very sweet, calm and gentle nature, revealing her self as a beautiful girl, inside and out!
